Transcribing New Hampshire’s Colonial Past

History enthusiasts are invited to participate in a special Citizen Archivist initiative workshop hosted by Keene State College on Saturday, March 4th from 10:15am to 4pm. Workshop attendees become acquainted with Revolutionary War leader Meshech Weare and, using his papers, will learn to transcribe 18th century script. Weare headed New Hampshire’s Committee of Safety, which handled military matters from surveillance of Loyalists to commissioning privateers. Following the war he served as the state’s first president (before governors existed) and documents feature discussion of the severe economic problems of the 1780s. Weare's most frequent correspondents included George Washington, John Jay, and Nathaniel Peabody. The workshop will also introduce 17th and 19th century script. The workshop is free, funded by the National Historical Publications and Records Commission, a division of the National Archives. Space is limited.
