First Church in Jaffrey Presents Jazz Concert to Benefit Drug & Alcohol Prevention Program
First Church Concert Benefits Drug & Alcohol Prevention Nonprofit
On the first day of “falling back” into Eastern Standard time, lighten up your day by coming to a jazz concert at First Church in Jaffrey on Sunday, November 6 at 2 PM. The Thousand Acre Swamp Jazz Band returns to perform its upbeat renditions of early jazz, swing, and blues music. The 6-member Jazz band takes its name from the Thousand Acre Swamp in the North Quabbin area of western Massachusetts. The band’s members hail from both New Hampshire and Massachusetts and have played in several local venues in the past four years.
Proceeds from this special concert will benefit Reality Check, a new nonprofit in Jaffrey, located at 21 Goodnow Street, which was recently awarded a grant from the White House Office of National Drug Control Policy to implement its Drug- Free Communities program. Mary Drew, Reality Check CEO, said, “I am deeply concerned about the national and statewide drug epidemic, and especially concerned about Jaffrey because it’s where my children and I live. This grant will enable us to implement prevention strategies for youth, young adults, and entire communities belonging to the Jaffrey-Rindge and Con-Val School Districts.” To secure the grant, Drew received support from multiple community partners, and the new grant has turned her vision into a reality.
Reality Check will use the grant to offer prevention plan development to school districts which will include: buying evidence-based prevention curriculum, materials, and getting facilitators trained; training on substance use and mental health issues; survey administration; prevention media campaigns; parent workshops; events, presentations, and many youth-led campaigns. The funds raised by the November 6th concert will be earmarked to purchase supplies and fund Jaffrey-Rindge school events.
No reservations are necessary, and the suggested donation per adult is $10. For information call 603-532-7979 or go to www. firstchurchinjaffrey.org. To find out more about Reality Check, go to www.realitychecknow.org or call 603-532-9888.
