An Evening With Queen Victoria
The Friends of the Jaffrey Library are proud to announce that Queen Victoria will be visiting Jaffrey on Thursday May 4, at 6:30. The royal event will take place in the Jaffrey Civic Center, thanks to co-sponsorship from the Jaffrey Historical Society. Supported in part by a New Hampshire Humanities grant, the program presents Sally Mummey, who uses Queen Victoria's diary and letters to reveal the personal details of a powerful yet humane woman, who took seriously her role as monarch. To help immerse the audience in living history Mummy performs in proper 19th century clothing resplendent with Royal Orders.
In 1837, teenaged Victoria ascended to the British throne, untrained and innocent. Those who would try to usurp her power underestimated this self-willed intelligent young woman whose mettle sustained her through her 63-year reign. She led her empire through its greatest expansion – in industrial, cultural, political, scientific and military change – and inspired the world. Victoria and her husband, Albert, set an example of high moral character and dedication, a novelty in the royal house after generations of scandal. An era bears her name.
With passion, charm, and wit, Sally Mummey dispels the myth, legend, and fable which obscure the real woman. She incorporates her research to reveal intricate details to the audiences, writes her own scripts, and engages in spontaneous, first-person dialogue without breaking character.
An “Evening with Queen Victoria” begins promptly at 6:30 The Jaffrey Civic Center is located adjacent to the library at 40 Main street. The program is free and open to the public. Contact 602-532-7979 or go to www.facebook.com/JaffreyLibrary.
